I prefer a stand that you can store things in the base that way you can keep a sump or other fish equipment out of sight.
The Setup:
After you have the tank and stand you'll need one very crucial element in saltwater tank keeping--live rock. Live rock is basic oceanic rock that has been formed in the ocean. Don't be fooled by just any funny looking fish rock though(which is called base rock). You'll need rock that has living organisms on it and has come from either directly the ocean or from a very mature tank system. You can even build a tank full of base rock and just use one good live rock to seed the rest of it(this would take a decent amount of time though).
That brings up another thing--time. The biggest mistake people make when setting up a saltwater tank is that they are not patient enough to let the tank become stable. Instead they want to add fish and corals now, now, now! Setting up a long lasting saltwater system takes time. Once you add your rocks and sand you should let your system go at minimum 2-3 weeks before even thinking about adding any fish. For coral you should wait even longer.
Needs:
- Live Rock - to house good bacteria and organisms
- Heater - keeping the water at a more tropical level
- Protein Skimmer - expensive but they are worth it, helps keep the water column clean
- Sump - not a total need but it does help maintain water stability
- Flow - power-heads, jets and overall water movement, the ocean doesn't sit still like a lake so neither should your tank
After all these steps and keeping your tank stability maintained for a few weeks, you then can start to add your fish. Be careful though to make sure your fish will get along with other fish you plan on adding to your tank. You also want to add your fish slowly--one a week/month. This keeps your fish from freaking out and going into shock when you have so many added at the same time. You should also wait to add your biggest and/or most aggressive fish last. This way the other fish have time to setup territories.
